The largest industries by employment are Administrative Support/Waste Management, Retail, Health Care & Social Assistance and Accommodation/Food Service.

Administrative Support/Waste Management

This important industry sector is comprised of businesses that perform support activities crucial to the day-to-day operations of other organizations. These businesses include office administration, staffing services, document preparation, solicitation, collection, security and surveillance services, cleaning, and waste disposal services. They can range from small, entrepreneurial businesses to large companies and are one of the largest employers in our area.

Retail

The Town of Colonie is a shopper’s paradise. Wolf Road is the mecca of retail in the Capital Region with Colonie Center mall and its long stretch of stores and restaurants populating the corrodor.  Intersecting Wolf Road is Central Avenue, an 11-mile stretch stacked with everything from large national chain stores to small, locally owned businesses. The area draws residents from up to 40 miles away to shop and dine.

Healthcare & Social Assistance

The Town of Colonie businesses are leading the way in healthcare investment to provide state-of-the-art resources for our community residents and aging populations. Recent IDA project, Shaker Pointe at Cardonlet, included the redevelopment of approximately 30 acres of land and existing buildings into a beautiful retirement community campus. Other projects include Colonie Senior Service Centers and Everett Road Senior Housing.

To provide the employment base needed for this important industry, there are many schools right here in the Town of Colonie to train the next generation of healthcare workers including Siena College, Bryant & Stratton College, SUNY Empire State College, BOCES Health Careers Center, as well as many other schools just a short drive away.

Hospitality: Accommodation & Food Service

As home to the Albany International Airport and other major travel corridors, The Town of Colonie sees a large share of travelers and tourists pass through the area. Just a minute from the airport, one of the area’s landmark hotels, The Desmond Hotel, recently completed a large IDA assisted renovation project to upgrade their facilities.
